The So-Called 'Gospel' of Judas
Unmasking an Ancient Heresy

April 12, 2006

Welcome to Holy Week, American style. Just as millions of Christians are preparing to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the media is once again out to debunk historical Christianity.

Just last weekend I was in an airport bookstore and saw the new book counter filled with numerous editions of The Da Vinci Code. Then I picked up the New York Times, and there I was greeted with the headline on the front page that read, "In Ancient Document, Judas, Minus the Betrayal."

You probably have seen the hype, including a one-hour National Geographic TV spectacular: After seventeen hundred years, the story goes, the long-lost text of the so-called "Gospel of Judas" has re-surfaced. It claims that Jesus secretly told Judas to betray Him; so Judas is really a good disciple.

Well, it's not a new discovery. This "new gospel" and the heresy it espouses—Gnosticism—were rejected as fiction by Christian leaders and the Church as early as 180 A.D.

Gnosticism was an attempt to add to Christianity an essentially Eastern worldview dressed up with Christian language. It was presented to the Roman world as the true Gospel—complete with endless mysteries that only those with secret knowledge could unravel. Many unsuspecting people were enthralled with Gnostic writings, particularly their sometimes gory and salacious initiation ceremonies. Christian pastors and theologians repeatedly rejected all forms of Gnosticism, until, by the middle of the third century, it had all but disappeared.

But now it is back with a vengeance, with supposed discoveries and works like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. It provides the means for Christianity's detractors to debunk the historical Jesus, and it certainly sells books. Seven million copies of The Da Vinci Code is testimony to that. Gnosticism has particular appeal today because of the postmodern age, which has rejected historical truth. So you can find God any way you wish, through your own group. This, of course, is the belief that is at the root of the spreading New Age movement.

The danger is that we have a biblically illiterate population. People today don't know—maybe don't care—whether there is a difference between the Gospel of Judas and the Gospel of John. They are unfamiliar with the work of the ancient canonical councils of the Church (which rejected the Gnostic "gospels" time and again) or even of the basic creeds or confessions of the Christian Church. Sadly, people are as gullible today as ever.

Now it is tempting to get angry at National Geographic and the liberal press for unleashing this fraudulent "gospel" at the beginning of the holiest week of the year. But don't. Instead, let's use the media attention to debunk the debunkers, to point out to friends that this regurgitated Gnosticism—the Da Vinci Code and the "gospel" of Judas included—is nothing more than historically unsupportable fantasy.

Then we can point them to the knowledge that is accessible to all people that has been accessible to Christians for two thousand years and proven historically accurate. It's called the Bible.

But whatever you do, get informed first. Come to our website or call us here at "BreakPoint" (1-877-322-5527) and find some of the resources that we are offering. And get busy because millions can be suckered in—unless you and I set the record straight.

"The Most Important Question About the Road You're On"
1 Timothy 2:3-5

Listen to the audio broadcast!

Every time I go to an airport, there are lots of planes to choose from. Sometimes I walk past dozens of gates and planes to get to one plane at a faraway gate. Sometimes I get on this little "puddle jumper" plane when I'd, of course, would rather board a big, sleek aircraft. I don't get on the first plane I see, or the one that's the most convenient to get to, or the one that looks the most comfortable, or the one that looks best to me. I pick which plane I'll board based on one simple factor - its destination.

I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Most Important Question About the Road You're On."

There are lots of planes at that airport that will give you a nice ride, but they won't get you home. The question that decides which plane to board is pretty straightforward: "Will this take me where I want to end up?"

Nowhere is more riding on that question than when it comes to where we will spend eternity; especially at a time when our culture offers a confusing spiritual buffet to choose from. Many religions are seeking our allegiance in this growing marketplace of spiritual options. And there are countless alternatives to conventional approaches to God - approaches that allow you to develop your own personalized spirituality. Whether your way to God is a traditional religion or a non-traditional spirituality, it's important to ask the only question that really matters: "Will this take me where I want to end up?" Not "Do I like the way this makes me feel?" or "Shouldn't I follow the religion I was raised in?" There are some beautiful roads that don't lead to heaven. There are some spiritual systems that will, like that wrong aircraft, give you a lift but won't get you home.

God's made it clear in His best-selling book, the Bible, that there's one way to end up in His heaven when you die. And it's not a religion. It's a person. In 1 Timothy 2:3-5, our word for today from the Word of God, He says: "God our Savior ... wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all men." Why just one man who can be the go-between to get us to God? Because there's only one man who "gave Himself as a ransom for all men."

A ransom is the price you pay to get someone back. The price to get us back was the death of Jesus Christ for the sin that separates us from God. A religion, a personal spirituality can make us feel spiritual, even close to God, but it can't pay the death penalty that we carry because we've dethroned God in our lives to run it ourselves. It took what Jesus did on the cross to do that. Only the man who died for your sin can remove your sin. If you die with your sin unforgiven, there's no way God can let you into His heaven. Even Christianity, the religion that's about Jesus, can't get you to heaven. It's Jesus! In the powerful words of Acts 4:12, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

The only way to get to heaven is to be totally depending on Jesus Christ to get you there. It means abandoning all other hopes of getting to God and to heaven and fully trusting the one way God provided - Jesus, His one and only Son. If you've never reached out to Him and given yourself to Him, you're in grave spiritual danger, no matter how sincere you may be in whatever else you're depending on. You can be totally sincere in your belief that a certain plane will get you where you want to go, but no amount of sincerity can change the fact that it just won't get you home.

When you open your heart and your life to Jesus, you know in your soul that this is finally the real thing because Jesus is there now. I pray that you'll tell Him, "Jesus, I'm Yours" this very day. At our website, there's a brief explanation of just how to begin your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You can listen to it or read it. Just go to I think it will help answer a lot of questions. If you'd rather get this information in print, just call us for my booklet, Yours For Life. Call 877-741-1200.

Jesus paid your passage to heaven with His life. That's how much He loves you. Go with Him today, because He's the One who can get you home.

The Security of the Throne
Betsy Childs

Today the Queen of England will preside over the Royal Maundy Service at
Guildford Cathedral. In this service, held each year on the Thursday
before Easter, the British monarch presents gifts of money to the poor.
According to the royal website, "The tradition of the Sovereign giving
money to the poor dates from the 13th century. The Sovereign also used to
give food and clothing (later changed to a gift of money), and even washed
the recipients' feet--this varied from Sovereign to Sovereign, the last
Monarch to do so was James II."

It must have been startling and unsettling to view royalty in the
indecorous posture of foot washing, and it is not surprising that this
element of the ceremony was dropped several hundred years ago. Although
now the Queen would risk nothing but her dignity by assuming such a task,
this was not the case during the reign of James II and many earlier
monarchs. There were often disputes within the kingdom about who should
rightfully occupy the throne, and kings and queens seized every
opportunity they could to assert their power. In fact, James II was
eventually forced to abdicate and surrender the throne to William of
Orange and his wife Mary. In this political climate, even the smallest
display of meekness could jeopardize one's reign; perhaps this is why
William and Mary chose to leave the foot washing to others.

The Maundy Thursday service derives its name from the Latin "mandatum."
This refers to the command--or mandate--Christ gave his disciples at the
Last Supper. He said to them, "A new command I give you: Love one
another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (John 13:34).
Previous to this, John tells us, "Jesus knew that the Father had put all
things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to
God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a
towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began
to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped
around him" (John 13:3-5). It is significant that John draws a causal
connection between what Jesus knew and what he did. Jesus knew that all
authority was his because the Father had secured it. The security of his
throne freed him to assume the posture of a servant and wash the feet of
his subjects.

The washing of the disciples' feet began a chain of events that was the
opposite of what one would expect from a prospective king vying to win a
throne. When the contingent from the chief priests sought him in
Gethsemane, Jesus gave himself up, did not attempt to rally support in his
own defense (though he had many followers), and was willingly beaten and
executed. To all appearances, Jesus had lost his chance to rule because
he hadn't fought for it by exercising power. Instead of mobilizing his
forces, he knelt down and washed their feet. But in hindsight we know
that he did this because his rule was so very secure; not even death could
prevent it.

Christ is now seated at the right hand of God, an unassailable position
(Luke 22:68). Not only this, we are also told that God has "raised us up
with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus"
(Ephesians 2:6). Our place in his royal family is assured. We do not
have to secure our own reputations. Thus, we can, without fear, obey
Christ's command: "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your
feet, you also should wash one another's feet"(John 13:14). When I find
myself willing to serve others only if I can be sure that it won't injure
my own status, I have forgotten that I do not have to guard my honor or
establish my own reputation. The royal line is secure, and there should
be a causal connection between what we know and what we do. This should
free us to take off the outer clothing of our accomplishments and
insecurities, to get down on our knees, and to love others by serving

The Bride of Christ
By: Perry Stone

What and who is the bride of Christ? I have been preaching on this topic all of my entire ministry, yet I often get letters and E-mails asking questions about who is the bride of Christ. There are many diverse ideas and theories on this subject.

Some say Israel is the bride of Christ. They base their opinion on a verse in Isaiah: “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 54:5).

Others say the heavenly city, New Jerusalem, is the bride of Christ. They base this theory on their interpretation of Revelation 21:

Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:2-4).

New Jerusalem was beautifully adorned as a bride, John said, because it will be the eternal home of Christ’s bride. But notice that while it was a prepared city and a beautiful city, it was never called the bride.

The Bible teaches that the church is the bride of Christ. To better understand this teaching about the bride of Christ, let’s review the ancient Jewish wedding.

Jewish Wedding Tradition

The Jewish wedding process began in a public ceremony when the couple announced their intentions to get married. This rite was preceded by an agreement between the two fathers and initiated the betrothal period.

The betrothal period lasted approximately a year, during which the groom returned to his father’ s house and began preparing a room for his new bride. Following completion of the room, a priest inspected the room to make sure it was better than the current living conditions of the bride.

In the meantime, the bride prepared herself for the wedding ceremony, which would begin approximately a year later. The exact day and hour were unknown, but the bride and the wedding party had to be prepared for the announcement of the coming bridegroom.

When the long-awaited day came, the wedding feast and ceremony started with one of the groomsmen leading the bridegroom through the streets, yelling, “ Behold, the bridegroom comes!” After a shofar sounded, the wedding party went to the bride’s house where the bridegroom claimed his bride, and took her to the wedding supper. The wedding feast would last seven days.

A Vision of the Bride

When John was exiled to the lonely isle of Patmos, he had plenty of time to worship and commune with God. He soon learned he was there by divine appointment because God began showing him visions, and revealing to him what to write in the last Book of the Bible.

In the grand sweep of the panorama of end-time events, John described what he saw:

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel (Revelation 21:9-12).

As verse nine says, the bride is the Lamb’s wife. It is obvious that the Son of God will not be marrying great, high walls with 12 gates; or streets of gold like transparent glass; or the other descriptions of the city John put in this book. Instead, the bride is the people of the city, those who have been raptured away by the Bridegroom and taken there for this occasion.

When I say, “ Chicago honors him,” it is obviously not the physical city that honors him; it is the people of the city. New Jerusalem had the tabernacle of God peopled with redeemed saints who had overcome the world and the devil and had become the bride of Christ.

This new city coming down from God out of heaven, is alluded to as both a city and a woman—just as the false bride, Mystery Babylon the Great, was both a city and a woman. A bride speaks of intimacy, and a city speaks of community. In that city, we will live in close intimacy, not only with the Lord himself, but with each other as well. John wrote in one of his letters:

It has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed,we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (1 John 3:2, 3).

A Friend of the Bridegroom

It was revealed to John the Baptist early in his ministry that Jesus, his first cousin, would be heaven’s divine Bridegroom sent to the earth. Knowing he was the final voice to Israel before the old era would be gone and the Kingdom preached, he knew he would not be a part of the bride of Christ. He told some Jews:You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, “I am not the Christ,” but, “I have been sent before Him.” He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’ s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:28-30).

Paul understood the church to be the bride of Christ, and wrote to a careless, carnal church at Corinth:

I promised your hand in marriage to Christ, presented you as a pure virgin to herhusband. And now I'm afraid that exactly as the Snake seduced Eve with his smooth patter, you are being lured away from the simple purity of your love for Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2, 3, MSG).

Christ and the Church

The relationship Christ has with His church is a bridegroom relationship. He loved the church so much He was willing to die for it . . . and did! Why? So that just as the Jewish bridegroom would present his bride to himself, so Jesus may “present her toHimself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27).

He wants to present the pure church to Himself. Isn’t this what every bridegroom desires? During days of courtship she may go out with others; but when they are engaged, she is promised to be his alone. They both longingly await the day when this can be realized. When the wedding day comes, he is her’s and she is his for the enjoyment of each other.

Christ’s Love for His Bride

Understand that Christ has fallen head-over-heels in love with you. When Jesus said He loved us enough to die for us, He meant it literally. It had to be love that led Jesus to spread out His hands for nails to be driven through them. It had to be love for Him to allow a crown of thorns to be pummeled into His brow with a rod, when all the time ten million angels would have rescued Him.

Jesus could have ended the drama of His crucifixion at any time, but He loved you so much He couldn’t bear to spend eternity without you. So with His blood he paid theprice for a royal wedding. Isaiah 61:10 says:

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Just as the process of preparing for a Jewish wedding was as crucial as the ceremony and the feast, so it is just as important for us to spend our time preparing for His presence in our lives on a daily basis. We must focus on our relationship with Christ. Being the bride of Christ is more than standing at the altar in a white dress,it is the supreme act of knowing personal, intimate communion with Him.

Look past the whole gender thing. God is talking about the most intimate relationship Christ could have with His people. The marriage relationship, properly perceived and appreciated, is the most intimate relationship two people could ever have. So the Bible uses the imagery of a bride and marriage to describe His relationship with His church. He wants us to recognize how deeply He loves us, and how intimately He wants to relate to us.

Eternity’s Crowning Event

In Revelation, New Jerusalem is described as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. Everyone loves weddings. When the bride comes down the aisle, beautifully dressed for her husband, every eye is on her because she has prepared herself for her groom.

And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God” (Revelation 19:7-9).

All of heaven’s hosts rejoiced on the occasion of the Lamb’s wedding.
The bride was already with the bridegroom at the Wedding Supper.
The bride had made herself ready.
The wedding gown she wore was “the righteousness of the saints.”
Those who were called to the marriage supper of the Lamb were also blessed.
All the details of this story are accurate; they are the “true sayings of God.
The devil thought he was playing a joke on God when he crucified the Son of God. Because of the indescribable wickedness of sin, a high price had to be paid. So the devil, who had the power of death then (see Hebrews 2:14, 15), bargained. Jesus can have His bride if He will pay the bride price, Satan thought, but then He’ll be dead!

What Satan didn’t count on was the Resurrection! When we stand before the Bridegroom and gaze in rapturous love on the One who died for us, we will not be thinking of anything or anyone but Him! As Samuel Rutherford wrote in the 18th century:

The Bride eyes not her garments,
But her dear Bridegroom’s face.
And I will not gaze at glory,
But on my King of Grace.
Not at the crown he giveth,
But on his pierced hands,
The Lamb is all the glory
Of Emmanuel’s land.

* * * Four Important Things To KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

But these are written so that you may
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the
Son of God, and that by believing in
Him you will have life. Jn 20:31

Seek the Lord while He may be found;
call on Him while He is near. Let the
wicked forsake his way and the evil
man his thoughts. Let him turn to the
Lord, and He will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for He will freely
pardon. "For My thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your ways
My ways," declares the Lord. "As the
heavens are higher than the earth, so
are My ways higher than your ways
and My thoughts than your thoughts.
As the rain and the snow come down
from heaven, and do not return to it
without watering the earth and making
it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed
for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is My word that goes out from My
mouth: It will not return to Me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire and
achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
You will go out in joy and be led forth
in peace; the mountains and hills will
burst into song before you, and all the
trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of the thornbush will grow the
pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle
will grow. This will be for the Lord's
renown, for an everlasting sign, which
will not be destroyed." Is 55

O Lord, you have searched me and you
know me. You know when I sit and when
I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying
down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know
it completely, O Lord. You hem me in -
behind and before; you have laid your
hand upon me. Such knowledge is too
wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where
can I flee from your presence? If I go up
to the heavens, you are there; if I make
my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide
me and the light become night around
me," even the darkness will not be dark
to you; the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you. For you
created my inmost being; you knit me
together in my mother's womb. I praise
you because I am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are wonderful, I know
that full well. My frame was not hidden
from you when I was made in the secret
place. When I was woven together in the
depths of the earth, your eyes saw my
unformed body. All the days ordained
for me were written in your book before
one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts,
O God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would
outnumber the grains of sand. When
I awake, I am still with you. Search me,
O God, and know my heart; test me
and know my anxious thoughts. See
if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Ps 139

But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up,
that I may show My power in you, and that My
Name may be declared in all the earth. Ex 9:16

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small:
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
