WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR TWO WORDS TO BE PARONYMOUS? Words that contain the same root, such as the words "wise" and "wisdom," are said to be paronymous. GUM AND BASEBALL The Chicago Tribune purchased the Chicago Cubs baseball team from the P.K. Wrigley Chewing Gum Company for $20.5 million in 1981. The sale ended the longest continuous ownership of a team that stayed in its original city, which had been 60 years. For the 2000 Super Bowl, about a third of the TV commercial spots were purchased by dot-com companies. The following year, the numbers dropped to just 10 percent bought by 'Net companies. Three hundred and fourteen acres of trees are used to make the newsprint for the average Sunday edition of the New York Times. There are nearly 63,000 trees in the 314 acres.
Changes to the appearance of the White House in Washington D.C., have occurred over the years. For instance, President William Taft converted the White House stables into a garage for four cars in 1909. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an avid golfer, had a putting green installed on the White House lawn. He also banished squirrels from the grounds because they were ruining the green. President Richard Nixon disliked the press, so it was odd that he ordered the filling in of the White House's swimming pool, thus giving reporters more room when covering White House events. Soon after Nixon resigned in 1974, the new President, Gerald Ford, had another pool dug on the White House lawn. 1949 - The salary of the President of the United States was increased from $75,000 to $100,000 with an additional $50,000 expense allowance added for each year in office. Today, the President makes $200,000 a year. 1985 - "The New York Times" announced that Lee Iacocca's book, "Iacocca", was 1984's best selling hard cover book. Not until the the 1990s when Rush Limbaugh's first novel arrived was it topped in sales. DID YOU KNOW... The term "happy-go-lucky" has been in existence since 1665. A young man went to visit his 90-year-old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of the state he lived in. After spending the night, his grandfather prepared breakfast for him consisting of eggs and bacon. He noticed a film-like substance on his plate and he questioned Grandpa, "Are these plates clean?"
Grandpa replied, "Those plates are as clean as Palmolive can get them, so go on and finish your meal."
That afternoon, while eating the hamburgers his grandfather made for lunch, he noticed tiny specks around the edge of his plate, and a substance that looked like dried egg yokes. So he asked again, "Are you sure these plates are clean?"
Without looking up from his hamburger, the grandfather huffed, "I told you before, those dishes are as clean as Palmolive can get them, now stop being so picky!"
Later that afternoon, he was on his way out to get dinner in a nearby restaurant. As he was leaving, Grandpa's dog started to growl and wouldn't let him pass. He yelled back, "Grandpa, your dog won't let me out!"
So Grandpa shouted, "PALMOLIVE, GET OUT OF THE WAY!"

Omnipresence -does that big theological term mean anything to you? Working it into a conversation might make you sound smart, but does it have any real import in your life?
Webster defines omnipresence as something or someone present everywhere at all times . Stuffy definitions don't usually capture such powerful notions -so consider a contrast to flesh this term out.
Neither you nor I are omnipresent. (Certainly, this is not news to you.) We are quite the opposite. We are spatially and temporally located. I am always in one place at one time. Spatially, I am always here or there. Temporally, I am always located at right now. Yes, I can think back to yesterday or ahead to tomorrow, but I do so from the vantage of right now.
Consider how our locatedness determines how we can relate and know others. If I want to see my friend I must go to him. To be with him I must share the same space with him. And so space separates my friend and me until we arrive at the same space at the same time. Temporally, I am also constrained. I cannot snap my fingers and automatically have a ten-year relationship with someone. I must spend ten years, or travel through ten years, with them to obtain that. Nor can I just immediately get to my meeting tomorrow. I must wait until tomorrow for that.
Now an omnipresent entity would not face these limitations. It would be everywhere for all times. It would not have to travel to meet someone. It would not have to wait for an appointment. It would already and always be there.
Is there such a thing in the universe? No, but there is such a Person. Our word for Him is God, and He is everywhere we ever are. This can be either a terrifying or comforting truth. For with all others you have the choice to be with them or leave them, spend time with them or depart, but with the omnipresent Person you have no such luxury. He is always with You, there, attentive to your thoughts, your emotions, and your actions. David, the poet-King, puts it this way, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?" This is terrifying if you do not trust Him, or know that He loves you. Christ tells us that God loves us, and Christ shows us that God is trustworthy. If you don't believe me, simply ask Him; He is there with you now.
Does anyone hear our thoughts? When you are in the office meeting and you think that terrible thing about your boss, are you the only one listening? When that errant thought about your friend flies across your mind, is the internal blush only seen by you?
The way we answer these questions, no doubt, will be indicative of the times in which we live, and a hallmark of our time is the gross over-emphasis upon the individual. Part and parcel of this over-emphasis is the manner in which we prize and misconceive the interior life: that which transpires inside the individual, that which no other human knows about except when we show it to them through words or actions. We conceive of our interior life as being wholly our own because we think that we are the only ones ultimately a party to it. "No one else is in my thoughts," we think, "therefore they are mine exclusively." And certainly this can seem to be very true. For instance, I cannot communicate to my best friend through my thoughts. At dinner with him, if I think, "Pass the salt," he will not hear me and pass the salt. He might read my body language, or know my eating habits, and pass the salt. But no matter how well he knows me, he will never read my thoughts; they will always be communicated to him through some other medium such as my words or actions. Thus it is easy to see why we construe our interior life to be a solitary monologue -for no other human can hear it.
But if we are to take seriously the notion of the omnipresence of God, and I think that most if not all intuitively know that notion to be true, then we must explode this conception of the solitary monologue. Your internal ears are not the only pair attuned to your interior life. The Divine ears, and eyes for that matter, are attentively fixed on you and your life, both external and internal. We cannot hide from Him in some corner of our mind. And just because we might forget that He is there, does not mean that He forgets that we are there and leaves off to go do something else.
This is terrifying if you do not trust Him, or know that He loves you. Yet Christ tells us that God loves us, and Christ shows us that God is trustworthy. If you don't believe me, simply ask God, He is listening to your thoughts. (Keith Cox)

Two UNC grads on a cliff with their arms outstretched.
One has some budgies lined up on each arm, the other has parrots lined up on his arms.
After a couple of minutes, they both leap off the cliff and fall to the ground.
Laying next to each other in intensive care at the hospital, one says to the other, "I don't think much of this budgie jumping."
The other grad replies, "Yeah, I'm not too keen on this paragliding either."
