What is the most historically significant event of 1776?
As an American, the signing of the Declaration jumps to mind. Arguably, America influences the shape of the world today and the destiny of the world tomorrow. And the global influence of the American experiment began in 1776. Constitutional democracy has swept the world over the last two centuries from India to Chile to Russia, American democracy has inspired as much as it has been emulated. That certainly qualifies the Declaration of Independence as a significant historical event of 1776.
Yet perhaps there is another plausible contender for this title: the publication of Adam Smith's work Wealth of Nations. Just as democracy has swept around the globe in the last two centuries, with equal pace and force, the ideas of Smith have gained sway. Smith's economic theories are the foundation for modern capitalism, which has gained currency from the markets of Nairobi, to the financial centers of Hong Kong, to the skyscrapers that line Wall Street. Unquestionably, Smith's work is a major shaper of our world today.
Given such enormous competition, could a third contender even be seriously considered? Mark Noll, the pre-eminent evangelical historian, thinks so. In a lecture at Harvard Divinity School, Noll made this startling statement:
I say with calculated awareness of what else was going on in Philadelphia [the signing of the Declaration of Independence], and in Scotland, where Adam Smith published his Wealth of Nations, that of all world-historical occurrences in [1776] the publication of August Montagu Toplady's [Rock of Ages] may have been the most consequential. (Footnote 1: Mark Noll and Ronald F. Thieman, Where Shall My Wond'ring Soul Begin? (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 2000) 12.)
The first and most reasonable response to such a bizarre statement is: what in the world do you mean, Professor Noll? How could a hymn be more historically significant than the Declaration of Independence? How could song and verse be more historically potent than Smith's Wealth of Nations?
Noll does not explain his surprising remark, but rather leaves it for the theological imagination of his audience. So imagine with me how this could be true.
Imagine what occurs when through a hymn countless men and woman are confronted with the love of God and His redeeming work on their behalf. Imagine thousands of hearts made tender in the sway of a tune. Imagine legions of transformed hearts singing, "Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling." Imagine God on the move.
Remember, God does not just save souls for the hereafter but redeems lives on this earth. Maybe that is how a hymn can matter so much. Keith Cox

Arnold and his wife were cleaning out the attic one day when he came across a ticket from the local shoe repair shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed that it was over 11 years old. They both laughed and tried to remember which of them might have forgotten to pick up a pair of shoes over a decade ago.
"Do you think the shoes will still be in the shop?" Arnold asked.
"Not very likely," his wife said.
"It's worth a try," Arnold said, pocketing the ticket. He went downstairs, hopped into the car, and drove to the store.
With a straight face, he handed the ticket to the man behind the counter. With a face just as straight, the man said, "Just a minute. I'll have to look for these." He disappeared into a dark corner at the back of the shop.
Two minutes later, the man called out, "Here they are!"
"No kidding?" Arnold called back. "That's terrific! Who would have thought they'd still be here after all this time."
The man came back to the counter, empty-handed. "They'll be ready Thursday," he said calmly.

Four important things to KNOW:
1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God.
2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (Free & at No Charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior).
3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven).
4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. Reviewing ROE: Stepping Out with Second Thoughts
Last month, justice blindly refused to look at plain facts. On June 17, Norma McCorvey, the "Jane Roe" in ROE V. WADE, filed a motion to re-open her famous case and request that the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion-on-demand be overturned in light of new facts.
But two days later, a federal district court dismissed her petition, ruling that it wasn't filed within a "reasonable time." Judge David Godbey wrote, "It is simply too late now, thirty years after the fact, for McCorvey to revisit that judgment."
McCorvey's attorney, Allan Parker, thinks the judge misunderstands the case. "This is not a case of newly discovered evidence, which must be brought in a short amount of time," he said. "It's a case of changed factual conditions and law."
"Changed factual conditions" include far better prenatal imaging than was available three decades ago. What showed up as a fuzzy "blob of tissue" inside the womb in 1973 imagery, now through 3D and 4D ultrasound shows up clearly as a baby. Even the popular press makes that obvious now -- take, for example, cover stories in the June 9 NEWSWEEK and last November in TIME.
Regarding "changed law," Parker pointed out that one factor in the Supreme Court's decision was that an unwanted child placed a burden on the woman. But since then, forty states have alleviated that burden -- enacting so-called "Baby Moses" laws, that authorize states to assume responsibility for the care of children whose parents don't want them.
A judge might justifiably get bogged down in the 5,400 pages of evidence McCorvey's attorneys filed. But one pivotal part of that evidence deserves notice: the affidavits from one thousand women who regret their abortions, probably including some affidavits filed as a result of our January 16 BreakPoint. An Atlanta woman reported, "Ten years after the abortion, I almost had a nervous breakdown -- have suffered emotionally for twenty-five years." A Knoxville resident said, "I went from being on the Dean's List in college to getting Fs, incompletes, and withdrawals. I attempted suicide." A third woman reported, "Guilt -- lack of ability to deal adequately with true love and sex in marriage," and a fourth, " . . . complications in [later] becoming pregnant and carrying a child."
Maybe the court was unimpressed with these one thousand women, thinking that that is an inconsequential percentage of the tens of millions of women who have had abortions. If you have had an abortion, please add your voice to those who have already filed. And if you know someone who has had an abortion or who went beyond the suicide "attempt" and actually took her life following an abortion, please report that as well. You'll find affidavits and other information on our website, www.breakpoint.org, or you can call us here at BreakPoint (1-877-3-CALLBP).
This issue is not going to go away. Noted Yale law professor Stephen Carter has written an excellent article in this month's CHRISTIANITY TODAY. "ROE," he writes, "was a bad decision in a legal sense, something the Court will one day realize."
Norma McCorvey said just speaking out about her role in legalizing abortion had lifted a crushing weight from her conscience. Post-abortive women can clear their consciences -- first, by asking God's forgiveness, then by writing out their story and submitting it to help others avoid the abortion mistake, and one day to help overturn a very bad law.

One of the reasons for the success of the internet is its open, peer-to-peer nature. All computers on the internet are equal, and in the past it hasn't mattered whether your computer is a 386 in Nguru on the end of a satellite phone or a big monster in a New York rack. If that ever changes, I think we will lose part of the essential, vital character of the internet. Doug Winter
